Art historian and curator Joseph L. Underwood will discuss the making and touring of the exhibition, The View From Here: Contemporary Perspectives From Senegal currently on view at the Zuccaire Gallery.
What does it mean for an art historian to work also as a curator? What are the challenges and benefits of disseminating research through an exhibition vs. through traditional print publications? How can a curator benefit from training in art history, just as museums are opening up their galleries to engage the public on a variety of platforms?
Featuring work created since 2010, and exhibited in four cities across Senegal and the United States, The View from Here offers a wide panorama of art practice from the perspective of artists—individuals who uncover aspects of their own identity as they reflect on contemporary life in Senegal. Collectively, their work acts as a portrait of how one African country can inspire creative minds, even as it balances universal questions with local characteristics.
