Faculty Lecture by Elyse Graham/EGL, Book and Dagger: How Scholars and Librarians Became the Unlikely Spies of World War II on Wednesday, Oct 30, 2024 from 5:00-6:30 pm in 2001 Humanities The Poetry Center. Sponsored by the English Department and HISB.
At the start of WWII, the US, in desperate need of an intelligence agency, formed the Office of Strategic Services (OSS)—and, seeking to fill its ranks with experts, turned to professors, and librarians for recruits. These surprising spies shaped the course of the war and our postwar cultural institutions.
Elyse Graham is a professor in the English Department at Stony Brook University.
