What is linguistic justice and how does it affect us as teachers and learners? How can instructors apply this concept to their teaching practice? At SBU, two initiatives are exploring this topic in innovative ways. One, the Center for Multilingual and Intercultural Communication (MIC) frames the issue by asking us to take a critical look at how English, both written and spoken, carries with it judgements, assumptions, and biases. Two, the Program in Writing and Rhetoric offers teaching resources that focus on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion by intentionally supporting instructors to increase critical awareness about politics and (global) citizenship within their teaching practice. Linguistic justice can be experienced by any student, staff, or faculty member. This is especially noticeable for those who speak/write stigmatized varieties of English and those who speak/write English as an additional language.
